The Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama - Osaka, 1938 - shot his first picture when he was thirteen years old. Since then he hasn't stopped his frantic investigation and recording of the world through the lens of his 35-mm camera. He did this without any preliminary plan. Smart and the more baffling when one delves into his randomly shot pictures that often have crooked perspectives and images out of focus. Everything matches: the composition, the idea ‘behind the photograph' and the way he handles his material in the darkroom in order to give the ‘final picture' its perfect but at the same time rough finishing touch. Recognizable by the coarse grain, the heavy black and white contrast and images that are often blurred. They emphasize the story Moriyama wants to tell: contemporary man, caught up in his environment, trying to find a way (out). Moriyama elucidates as it were the different steps of this quest. All perfectly registered in his four ‘telephone directories', that have become illustrious in the meantime.
Though primarily focused on his own Japanese universe, Moriyama starts to explore the world in the sixties - he visits New York and Paris and becomes influenced by Andy Warhol and Jack Kerouac, but most of all by William Klein. Klein's photo book New York spells a new starting point for Moriyama in whom he manages to develop new heights. In the course of the years his ‘notes in images' command ever more respect, also internationally. This is not as odd as one would expect: though situated in Japan, his vision is universal - ‘we' recognize much in his photographs. And, not just lovers of photography, but many international museums have acquired his work and numerous famous contemporary photographers have been influenced by Moriyama.
After Tokyo (2005) Reflex Amsterdam now organizes a new exhibition for which Moriyama specially made a series of 300 Polaroids. Here again: the typical, seemingly nonchalant approach of his environment. On first glance abstract and ‘vague' images, but on further investigation one finds the differences and discovers miniature perspectives.

De Japanse fotograaf Daido Moriyama - Osaka, 1938 - schoot op dertienjarige leeftijd zijn eerste foto. Sindsdien is hij niet opgehouden als een bezetene de wereld via de lens van zijn kleinbeeldcamera te verkennen en vast te leggen. En dat zonder vooropgezet plan. En dat is knap en nog vaker verbijsterend als je je verdiept in zijn lukraak gemaakte snapshotfoto's met vaak scheve perspectieven en onscherpe beelden. Alles klopt: compositie, het idee ‘achter de foto' en de manier waarop hij met zijn materiaal in de donkere kamer omgaat die aan het ‘totaalplaatje' zijn perfecte maar tegelijkertijd ruwe finishing touch geeft. Herkenbaar aan de groffe korrel, het grote zwart-wit contrast en vaak onscherpe beelden. Het versterkt het verhaal dat Moriyama wil vertellen: van de moderne, dolende mens die verstrikt in zijn omgeving een (uit)weg zoekt. Moriyama licht als het ware de verschillende stappen van deze zoektocht toe. Allemaal perfect vastgelegd in zijn inmiddels beroemde vier ‘telefoonboeken'.
Hoewel voornamelijk gefocust op zijn eigen Japanse universum, zie je dat Moriyama in de jaren zestig de wereld verkent - hij bezoekt New York en Parijs - en raakt beïnvloed door de Andy Warhol en Jack Kerouac, maar vooral door William Klein. Zijn fotoboek New York is voor Moriyama een nieuw startpunt die hij tot een nieuwe hoogtepunt weet te brengen. In de loop der jaren dwingen zijn ‘notities in beeld' ook internationaal steeds meer respect af. Niet zo vreemd: hoewel gesitueerd in Japan, is zijn visie universeel - ‘we' herkennen veel in zijn foto's. En niet alleen liefhebbers van fotografie - veel internationale musea hebben werk van hem aangekocht - ook tal van beroemde fotografen van nu zijn door Moriyama beïnvloed.
Reflex organiseert na Tokyo (in 2005) nu een nieuwe tentoonstelling waarin Moriyama speciaal een reeks van ‘duo snapshots' heeft gemaakt. En ook hier weer: de typische, quasi-nonchalante benadering van zijn omgeving. Op het eerste oog abstracte en ‘vage' beelden, maar kijk je langer dan ontdek je de verschillen en zie je vergezichten in het klein.
Het werk is getoond in vele solo en groepstentoonstellingen in gerenommeerde instituten als MoMa New York, Foto Biennale Rotterdam, Houston FotoFest, Fondation Cartier Parijs, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, San Fransisco MoMa, Metropolitan Museum New York, White Cube Londen, Barbican Museum Londen, Serpentine Gallery Londen en Tokyo Operacity waar hij samen met Nobuyoshi Araki een grote dubbeltentoonstelling genaamd ‘Moriyama-Shinjuku-Araki' heeft gehad.
Reflex Gallery en Daido Moriyama nodigen u van harte uit voor de vernissage op vrijdag, 20 juni 2008 tussen 16 en 18 uur. De tentoonstelling eindigt 14 augustus.
